Good day friends,
Whether we celebrate Valentine’s Day, there is no escaping its rampant manifestations this week 😊
For those of us who do not jump headfirst into the chocolate-flowers-cards traditional trifecta, I am proposing an alternative type of celebrations: a journey through 5 excellent Orthodox articles/sermons about the topic of Love, our understanding of it, our perspective, and our duties as Orthodox Christians.
I have also added 3 books I found to be extremely beneficial on the topic. I read excerpts from one of these titles regularly.
“Our relationship with God is a relationship of love. Saint John the Apostle says, “We love Him, because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19). Our perception of God’s love for us leads to loving Him. God’s love for us is an unlimited subject, as it is related to God’s unlimited and incomprehensible love for mankind as a whole. We cannot perceive the depth of God’s love for us because our mind and perception are limited; yet let us try to speak for even a little bit of God’s love for us.
“And while we express in many forms what we consider love, is there something more there than meets the eye? If there more to Love that what we simply perceive and feel? Let’s take a closer look at why love is the one of the fundamental elements of the Christian reality. “
If we wish to understand love in its true scriptural foundations, we must set before us (and understand) the following truth:
Love should be directed to God, before anyone or anything else This is what God revealed to us in the Book of Deutoronomy: “…” (Duet 6:5)
This article presents the Christian understanding of marriage, based on St. John Chrysostom’s homilies. Although he lived in the 4th and early 5th centuries, yet his teachings are pertinent to every generation and present the best understanding of what a Christian marriage should be like.
No Love? No Church. No Christianity.
What is love?
If you grew up when I did, you probably now have that 1993 Haddaway song in your head. But if you don’t know what I’m talking about, this should all still make sense anyway.
