Fun ideas to welcome children to their new Sunday School class!

A New Sunday School year begins

Yesterday, we celebrated the start of the Coptic New Year (The Feast of the Nayruz) which also signals the start of a new Sunday School year. while it was difficult to bid farewell to my beloved Sunday School angels,  I was blessed to meet my new class and my co-servants. By the grace of God, I will be serving Grade 1 and 2 this year. As such, I wanted to find fun ideas to welcome the children to their new Sunday School class!

The power of decorations:

In order to set a warm welcome tone for the little ones, I decorated the entrance with colourful helium balloons and then greeted the children as they entered the class, one by one.  These small gestures had a big impact and the balloons were a big hit!

A short lesson for the first Sunday together:

In order to welcome the students to a new year, we decided to have a short lesson regarding the Nayruz and its symbolism, followed by an icebreaker game. For younger children, it is important to provide the essential information in a concise manner so as not to lose their attention. And then we transitioned into the following game.

A great icebreaker game for children:

Here is the link to the fun icebreaker game we enjoyed playing with the children. This game allowed the children to recognize the similarities that they have with their classmates and to share a few laughs. For example, who knew that sushi or red peppers were favourite foods among first graders?

I did not!

We then concluded with a prayer and bid our angles goodbye.

May God bless you all abundantly throughout the remainder of the regular and Coptic year!

In Christ,

After graduating with a Major in Journalism, Mireille’s career path took an unexpected turn away from her beloved pen and paper. It took an equally unexpected turn of events for Mireille to start writing again. After spending many hours (too many!) watching super hero cartoons with her son, she realized that most Christian children are unaware of their superpowers! She set about creating the SuperHolies: the Fruits of the Holy Spirit re-imagined as superpowers to grab the children’s attention and teach them about their faith and its glory.
