“How” – A hymn about God’s love

I was blessed with the task of composing an original hymn for our Diocese’s Choir, the Angelic Praise Choir, for the annual recital. I was doubly blessed when my dear friend and talented musician, Dr. Mireille Wassef, composed the powerfully moving melody and performed the hymn as a soloist.

I am honoured to share the fruit of our labor with you and pray you will find this new hymn a welcome addition to our Coptic heritage.

Video of the performance follows the lyrics below.

Lyrics

How?

How could I continue in this way?

How could I betray you every single day?

How could I lift my eyes to the sky?

Without wondering when will you ask me why?

Chorus:

In the palms of your hands you carved my name

You stretched out your arms and took my blame

For my sake you left your heavenly throne

Exchanging it for spit, hate, and scorn

How could I keep repeating the very same sin?

How could I think this world is what I want to win?

How can you continue to forgive me this way?

At my door you stand knocking, wanting to stay.

Chorus:

In the palms of your hands you carved my name

You stretched out your arms and took my blame

For my sake you left your heavenly throne

Exchanging it for spit, hate, and scorn

Lord, your grace and mercy cover my shame

Your love and fatherhood are still  mine to claim

Chorus:

In the palms of your hands you carved my name

You stretched out your arms and took my blame

For my sake you left your heavenly throne

Exchanging it for spit, hate, and scorn
